when love has a time limit.

when love has a time limit.

Hollywood’s obsession with the ephemeral love story.

The only story more romantic than a ‘happily ever after’ is one that doesn’t even come close. At least, that’s what screenwriters keep insisting: for every When Harry Met Sally, there’s a Casablanca or Titanic, doomed passions that we inexplicably root for despite (or perhaps, because of) the inevitable gut wrench. James Bond, the coolly detached spy (and the namesake of a billion-dollar franchise) who enjoys a revolving door of Bond girls throughout his endless incarnations, has seen dozens of his love interests die— at least 16 met grisly ends by the time Daniel Craig took on the mantle, according to a 2009 tally by The Guardian. When Craig’s 007 finally finds his match in Dr. Swann, their story ends abruptly when Bond himself dies; turns out, writers do have a license to kill.

Even when our protagonists don’t befall a tragic fate, they’re still at the mercy of distance, timing, and other wedges driven between them and their happy ending. In Past Lives, our childhood sweethearts are ultimately separated not by death but by oceans and the passage of time. Kate Beckinsale invents arbitrary rules for relationship-building in Serendipity, condemning John Cusack to remember the one romantic evening they’ve spent together. And while the stars (and script) ultimately align to bring Jesse and Celine together in the Before trilogy, their initial coupling is limited to one 14-hour rendezvous. Will Gluck’s latest effort, One Night Only, takes the tragic love story to hilarious (and even more time-sensitive) new heights— perhaps also answering why these stories endure, even when the relationships do not:

the stakes have never been higher.

Even under apocalyptic circumstances, some characters can still find it within themselves to fall in love— just ask the leads from Seeking a Friend for the End of the World or 28 Days Later. While the state of affairs in One Night Only isn’t as dire, our protagonists’ love lives are bound by a government mandate that limits pre-marital sex to one night a year. That makes time especially of the essence, leaving little room for anything but instant chemistry. So long, slow burn.

they skip the small talk.

While in most cases this would be considered love bombing, speedrunning through years of emotional baggage in one night can create quite the bond if you’re in a crunch. As time runs out, vulnerability becomes less of a liability and more of a necessity; there’s no room for playing it cool or safe, and the traditional timelines we adhere to before baring our truest selves don’t exist. Add in the fact that it’s a lot easier to be honest with a stranger you’ll never see again than someone you want to impress, and you’ve got the recipe for real intimacy, however brief.

they give us a proper goodbye.

Sometimes the most romantic thing movies can do is know when to stop. Although Hollywood endings aren’t always sweet, it’s a relief knowing how and when exactly a story ends. While arguments persist over whether Jack could’ve fit on the door or if Mia and Sebastian could’ve made it work, at least we find closure— however tragic —in their fates being final. That is, of course, until the inevitable sequel or reboot…
