As much as we would all prefer not to think about it, many of our parents and grandparents are still enjoying pretty healthy sex lives. It's easy to assume that once we get to a certain age, all inclination to have sex dissipates—but that’s actually far from the case.
A recent study published in the Journal of Sex Research revealed that it’s not how old we are that stops us from having good sex later in life, but how old we feel.
Researchers surveyed more than 1,000 adults, aged between their mid-40s and mid-70s, about their attitudes towards sex. The verdict? The closer they felt to their actual age, the less they enjoyed sexual activity. And those who had negative opinions about age in general also reported less satisfying sex lives.
So what’s the secret to feeling young at heart? Well, that depends on the individual, but we’ll offer up a few suggestions:
- Do something that scares you every day.
- Take up a new hobby every six months.
- Travel often.
- Always stay curious.
- Spend time with people who make you laugh.
- Stay away from things (and people) who don’t make you happy.
